Electropollution and the Decline in Health of a Nation

It may surprise you to hear that the biggest health threat to the US may be electropollution. The explosion of iPhones, Blackberries, WiFi, WiMax, video game consoles and even remote-control toys has fundamentally changed our lives and our electrical environment. You can’t see it, you can’t taste it, you can’t touch it; but the air all around us is increasingly filled with electromagnetic radiation (EMR) that is penetrating our bodies and potentially disrupting our body chemistry – perhaps forever.

Every moment of every day, invisible fields of electrons are striking our bodies like tiny darts and stealthily triggering dozens of bio-chemical reactions, which in turn, undermine our health and lay the groundwork for disease.

How does this happen? As Nobel-prize nominee, Dr. Robert Becker described in “The Body Electric,” our brains; our hearts and every one of the seven trillion cells in our body operate on electrical impulses.  These minuscule electrical fields can be easily disrupted by the electropollution around us, especially when the frequency wavelength is bioactive. One obviously bioactive area is the brainwave region, which operates between 0 and 33 hertz (cycles per second). Yet both Verizon and ATT include data waves on their cellular signals that blast right into the middle of our brainwave activity, which can not only disrupt concentration and memory but deeply disturb our sleep.

Other frequencies, by virtue of their wavelength, uniquely resonate with electrically-charged particles in our bodies like calcium or sodium ions, or even various organs of the body. A typical cell tower signal is about 5 inches long, which is the perfect length to radically resonate across the brain bouncing inside the child’s developing skull. In effect, a child’s head is acting like an antenna and magnifying the power by up to ten times of the nearby signal at a rate of 1.9 billion cycles per second.

Natural electromagnetic fields are essential to life. Besides being the first to identify electrical activity in the area of acupuncture points in the body, Dr. Robert Becker also found that healing only takes place if the current at the point of injury is negatively charged.  When it turns positive, the healing process shuts down. So, even our ability to heal is fundamentally dependent upon electrical fields and thus subject to interference from the unpredictability of ambient EMR. Even the earth itself maintains its own electromagnetic field at 7.83 hertz, which is essential to life. In the 1960s, NASA found that astronauts would lose up to 25% of their bone mass in just weeks without the presence of the earth’s natural electromagnetic field. Later an artificial version of the earth’s electromagnetic field was added to the spacecraft to rectify the human ‘electrical’ problem.

Life could not exist without the presence of natural electromagnetic fields. In fact, the very definition of death presumes the absence of electrical activity in the body. But what about the explosion of artificial magnetic fields around us, how are these burgeoning signals affecting us?  Since the early 1960s, there has been an ongoing debate between scientists, government, industry and the military as to the health impacts on humans from electromagnetic radiation. In fact more than 16,000 studies have tackled the issue. Now, more than 5000 studies (see www.justproveit.net/studies)  connect low-level wireless signals and other EMR with more than 122 biological effects. These are the kinds of signals to which we are all exposed everyday: cell phones, WiFi, tablets, fluorescent lights and cell towers. Yet, nearly 10,000, mostly single signal studies fail to find the connection.

US regulators and policy-makers are using these numbers as a rationale to continue to approve the deployment of unproven technologies.  They typically claim that if microwaves from wireless technologies don’t heat your body, they are safe. This is called the thermal effect. As to the low-level (non-thermal) frequencies, the regulators dodge the issue, claiming there is no proof, or consensus in the science showing harm. Yet there is no proof, or consensus showing that exposure to low-level frequencies is safe.

It’s almost inconceivable. Hundreds of scientists for more than 20 years have been showing that there is nearly a 1 in 3 chance (31%) that wireless technologies cause bio-effects at low-levels. Yet, US regulatory agencies are refusing to recognize the science.  What most of us don’t know is that agencies like the FCC, which are chartered with protecting the public from wireless and other EMR technologies, are mostly staffed by engineers and ex-telecommunication executives with virtually no biologists, or MDs on staff. Yet we’ve entrusted engineers and government bureaucrats with our health.

In effect, government regulators, who are not qualified to assess harm from wireless technologies are essentially placing a bet on our behalf that these ‘untested’ technologies won’t make us sick. But how do they know?

The US government is neither tracking the health effects of these newly adopted technologies nor has it funded a single non-classified study on the biological effects of wireless technologies since the late 1990’s. In the past decade, twelve new ubiquitous technologies have been rolled-out nationwide, including public WiFi, 3rdgeneration (3G) cell phones/ tablets, 3G Cellular networks, Bluetooth, WiMax, DECT cordless phones, 4G cell phones/ tablets and broad deployments of GPS in cars, phones and devices. Meanwhile fourteen international scientists, who produced the BioInitiative Report (www.bioinitiative.org) document more than two thousand, mostly independent studies, which connect wireless and other low-level EMR with the following:  DNA damage, chromosome breaks, brain cancer,  breast cancer and children’s cancers (leukemia), inflammation and electromagnetic sensitivity. The 630 page report also links numerous modern age symptoms such as headaches, sleep disturbances, concentration issues, fuzzy thinking, joint and muscle pain and memory loss to wireless.

As science is often crippled by abstract experiments with unproven simplifying assumptions, a better way to judge and validate scientific findings may be to look at the key health national trends:

Beginning in the 1980’s at the onset of the wireless revolution a profound change in our national health began to quietly emerge. It began with emergence of a bevy of previously-unknown auto-immune diseases like chronic fatigue (CFS), lupus, environmental illness (EI) and fibromyalgia.  Soon an explosion in neurological disorders began with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s showing a dramatic increase.  Next, certain cancers began to suddenly increase, such as melanoma, testicular, lymphoma, breast and prostate cancers. Then, in the 1990s, ailments like diabetes, attention deficit disorder (ADD/ ADHD) and Autism began to explode.

In the past fifteen years sleep disturbances, anxiety and mood disorders have sky-rocketed. In the 1970s only about 4% suffered from sleep issues. It is now closer to 60%.  Meanwhile more than 18 million Americans are diagnosed as depressed. Depression in children is growing at 23%. It should be no surprise that the top selling pharmaceutical drugs are for pain, sleep and depression.

What has happened to our national health?

It might surprise you to know that in the 1950s, when there were few health clubs; the American diet was loaded with fat; vitamin supplements were rare; executives downed three martini lunches and almost everyone smoked like a smokestack, may have been the healthiest decade ever. Expectations for getting cancer were only 1 in 6 in the 1950’s. It is now 1 in 2 for men. Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and most modern autoimmune diseases were unheard of.  Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s and ALS were rare. Diabetes was only beginning to emerge and heart disease and strokes for young people was unusual.

Between the 1930’s and the mid-1950’s, the US had extended the average life expectancy from 55 to 72 years – a 31% gain. Well here’s the good news: we now live to 80 – we’ve added 8 more years. But, on average, more than half of that eight year gain is spent in a nursing home, suffering from either dementia, or Alzheimer’s.

What has happened to our health in the US?

Despite the many advances in medicine during the 20th century, the US and other industrialized nations have been experiencing explosions in disease and pervasive ill-health. While many scientists and the pharmaceutical industry are rushing to find drugs to manage the symptoms of these illnesses, almost no progress has been made to find root causes. 19 diseases have exploded since 1985 without explanation and yet no one is asking, is there a unifying factor? Theories abound on the causes and underlying factors for the big six diseases: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurological disorders (Alzheimer’s et al), autoimmune disorders and allergies (asthma). But all this work, which is mostly inconclusive, is taking place in silos. Few are looking at the bigger picture: and asking, what has changed in our environment?

The health system in the US has gotten really good at managing symptoms the past two decades but no one can explain the spontaneous explosion of the six major disease groups with no obvious connection, beginning in the 1980’s. Scientists agree that these diseases are closely associated with environmental factors, and/or lifestyle. We hear incessantly about the importance of diet and exercise; smoking and the exposure to chemicals and other toxins in our environment. But are these the lead causes, or simply supporting actors in the emerging health drama, driven by something less obvious?

Millions are spent each year on research, attacking the possible causation of the big six diseases. Most of this research is approached from either a purely biological or chemical angle. Sometimes there is an interdisciplinary approach, involving experts in biology and chemistry. Yet the human organism is clearly much more than simply the sum of body parts, operating in a bio-chemical paradigm. Is the missing factor the role of electrical energy and the tiny electromagnetic fields that are triggering our heart, our brain, our endocrine system and constantly transmitting messages to every cell in our body? As few scientists are trained across biology, chemistry and electricity, we are left in the dark as to the interrelationship of all three key factors. More importantly we are blinded by continuing to ignore the pivotal role of electrical disturbances transmitted from our environment that may be setting off a chain of bio-chemical events that is leading to an epidemic of disease.

Does the stealthy arrival of electropollution which has closely paralleled a new era of unexplained disease prove it is the unifying factor that is making us all so sick?

New Evidence

In the past several years, there have been two potentially landmark events that shed new light on the science, linking EMR from wireless technologies to broad health impacts, dozens of biological effects and all of the 19 currently exploding diseases.

The first is a surprising clue from the past. In July 2010, a previously unrecognized collection of nearly 5000 studies linking low-level wireless signals to bioeffects was discovered by noted scientist, Magda Havas, PhD of Trent University in Ontario, Canada.  More than 2300 of these studies, concerned with radio-frequency and microwave radiation, were compiled in 1972 by Dr. Zorach Glaser, PhD, on officer in the US Navy at the request of the Naval Medical Research Institute1. Many of these studies were previously classified and others originated in Eastern Block nations such as the USSR, Poland and Czechoslovakia and have only recently been translated.  Here is a sampling from Dr. Glaser’s report of the 122 biological phenomena (effects) and clinical manifestations attributed to microwave and radio-frequency radiation:

This treasure trove of “lost” science that was compiled by the US Navy has opened the door for a real renaissance for scientists, who are researching the link between low-level wireless technologies and dozens of unexplained symptoms, disorders and disease that have emerged since the wireless revolution began. But despite the fact that wireless technologies are being adopted at a dizzying rate, not one study has been funded by the US Government in the past 24 months to validate or challenge this lost science.

Meanwhile in August 2010, in a spectacular announcement that got very little coverage, noted epidemiologist, Samuel Milham, MD linked the growth of electrification and the incidence of four of the big six diseases. In his book “Dirty Electricity: Electrification and the Diseases of Civilization.” Dr. Milham connects dirty electricity with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders like ALS and suicide.

Dirty electricity refers to unusable energy (voltage transients), which is caused by electrical interference on the electrical wiring in your home, office or public building. Dirty electricity is created by fluorescent lights, WiFi, computers, battery chargers, smart meters, plasma TVs and the dramatic increase of electronics all around us. Seven studies have shown that what is considered electrical noise on power lines is also biologically-active. (Havas, Milham, Morgan et al). These studies, many of which were performed in schools, shows that this electrical noise may be causing, or worsening health impacts such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), chronic fatigue, diabetes (glucose rise) and asthma.

Eerily four of the diseases most associated with inflammation – cancer, heart disease, diabetes and neurological disorders are directly linked to dirty electricity. What’s most troubling is that the levels of exposures to  radiation from dirty electricity is miniscule compared to other classes of EMR like cell phones, WiFi and cell towers and other fields that we’ve grown to accept and trust.

Inflammation: The Smoking Gun

Both the studies cited from Dr. Zorach Glaser’s bibliography and the conclusions from the BioInitiative Report (www.bioinitiative.org) separately connect electrical fields from wireless technologies with inflammation. And Dr. Sam Milham’s work confirms that not only are diseases associated with inflammation like diabetes, ADHD and Asthma linked to dirty electricity, but the minuscule level of these fields should make us rethink the levels of exposures to other wireless technologies we previously had thought safe.

If inflammation turns out to be the ‘smoking gun’ as Dr. Olle Johansson, PhD of the Karolinska Institute (home of the Nobel Prize) believes, then we’re on the verge of solving one of the most important health issues of our time. Inflammation has been connected to nearly all of the 19 exploding diseases and emerging modern age symptoms, which affect more than 66 million Americans!

According to leading scientists, it has now been established that inflammation leads to or is associated with:

  • cancer
  • heart disease
  • autoimmune disease – headaches, sleep issues, joint and muscle pain
  • diabetes
  • neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and MS
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD)
  • Asthma

A front page article on inflammation in February 2004 TIME Magazine called “The Fires Within,” superbly documents the inflammation connection. If the evidence that wireless technologies causes inflammation can be further substantiated, we’ve found the unifying factor. Then the mystery of 19 exploding diseases since 1985 may be finally solved!

Scientists like Dr. Olle Johansson believe that the unbridled growth of electronics and wireless technologies have over-stimulated our immune response, causing widespread ill-health from chronic inflammation. Yet, the adoption of wireless technologies races on.

A nationwide roll-out of the smart grid, super WiFi and 4G cellular networks is presently in full-swing. Yet we now know that 5000 studies worldwide signal a troubling link between EMR and ill-health. We also strongly suspect that EMR-triggered inflammation to be the smoking gun to the explosion of health issues and disease.

With recent roll-out of these ubiquitous and ‘untested’ wireless technologies, the time has never been better to pause and ask the question:

Are we willing to bet that these wireless technologies aren’t making us sick?

And most importantly, what will we tell our children, if we are wrong?
